Reed Sweet Grass (Glyceria maxima)
Reed sweet grass (Glyceria maxima) is a tall ornamental British native grass with deep green strap-shaped leaves often flushed pink at the base as they emerge. Flowers are open heads of green to purple-green panicles up to 45cm (18in) long borne in mid to late summer. It provides nesting places for ducks and wildlife when established (they also eat the seed heads). It’s also the favourite food of the Water Vole and the submerged stems provide shelter for fish. It is a vigorous grower and is best planted in a basket to control its spread. Sun and semi-shade. Not suitable for small ponds
Height: up to 1.2m
Planting position: Pond marginal up to 5 – 15cm
You can reduce the depths of your margins by sitting the planting baskets on concrete blocks or similar.
You will receive a young plant around 5 - 10cm 4" - 6" high, with some or start of leaves and will be sent in it's rooted form to save on postal costs. It will require potting on receipt. NOTE: Winter and early spring there may only be shoots off the roots.
This plants can be planted directly into boggy areas or into the bottom of lakes/ponds. If there is a liner, we suggest using a water planting basket. Use aquatic soil, topped with heavy gravel or large stones. Alternate ways can be offered if you contact us.
